Case Study – Blocking A DDoS Attack

Case Study

MT Proxy Case Study

We recently implemented a new proxy server solution for a large, international broker. The broker was experiencing a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. We helped them to reduce their server load, block the malicious traffic, and implement a long-term solution for preventing future attacks.

Primary Issues

A DDoS attack is when someone attempts to bring down your website or crash your services by flooding your network resources with too much traffic. The purpose of a DDoS attack is to overwhelm your systems and reduce your ability to serve legitimate customers. Therefore, the attacks often inconvenience customers and cost businesses money.

The broker was experiencing a serious DDoS attack with malicious traffic coming in from numerous sources. Their servers were overloaded and they were starting to experience service disruptions. They were in need of a fast, affordable solution that would enable them to block the attack and continue delivering their trading services.

Project Outcomes

1 – Quick Solutions

Within 20 minutes of receiving the request, we had rolled out two new MT4 proxy servers. The broker’s IT staff then quickly added these new proxies to their network configurations. This new setup significantly reduced their main server load. It also enabled the broker to minimize any disruption and continue offering a good service to traders worldwide.

2 – More Protection

We helped the broker to identify where the malicious traffic was coming from. We saw that the DDoS attack was due to malicious bots and UDP packet floods. We found the IPs and the networks causing the overload and filtered out the traffic. This ensured that the new proxy servers performed optimally, and that no malicious traffic was able to reach the main servers.

3 – Smooth Partnerships

The broker had been referred to us by a business partner. We worked with the business partner to quickly resolve the client’s issue. We also informed them of the traffic sources, so that they could block any malicious traffic on their end too, and protect the broker’s other MT4 proxy servers from the same attack.

Project Conclusion

As soon as the malicious traffic was blocked everywhere, the amount of bandwidth and resources reduced to normal levels. It took us twenty minutes to add and create the new proxy servers, thereby solving the initial traffic problems. We then spent several hours helping the broker with their DDoS reporting and troubleshooting. The broker now has a robust, long-term security solution. They are also now an MT Proxy client.
